General Information:
The rotator cuff is a combination of four different muscles: infraspinatus, supraspinatus, subscapularis, and teres minor. The surgery involves removing any debris from the joint (known as debridement), repairing any tears that may be present, and smoothing out the bones in that area to allow for fluid motion.
Recovery:
The recovery process for rotator cuff surgery is difficult and painful. It is very dependent on the extent of the injuries and the amount needed to be repaired in surgery. The affected arm is in a sling allowing for ample time to heal. Physical therapy sessions occur after surgery to move the shoulder through its range of motion, and start to rebuild the area for normal use. After the sling is removed and the doctor approves, different physical therapy is started, to regain normal functions of the area.
